Chain and sprockets maintenance – Motorcycle chain lube

There are 3 things you can do to save a tonne of cash on motorcycle chain and sprockets as I found out.

Just applying a motorcyle chain lube is not effective as dirt remins in situe which causes friction. It’s friction that kills the life of your motorcycle chain and sprockets.

I used to think that slapping on some chain lube was enough. To be honest I was pretty lazy. At a push I’d lube my chain at the weekened.

Trouble is that that I still used to get through lot’s of chain and sprockets – and I could never understand why my friend, who also had a Honda Fireblade used to change his chain and sprockets less frequently than I did.

He then put me onto chain cleaning products and explained that putting motorcyle chain lubrication on a dirty chain covered in grit and dirt was not effective to prolong the life of your chain and sprockets.

He explained that the thing that caused chains and sprockets to wear out so quickly was FRICTION and the thing that caused FRICTION was grit and dirt so the best thing to do was to clean the chain before lubricating it. Such a simple thing but something that me, and I’m sure many others, over look.

He then went onto explain that the other thing that “gave him the advantage” was that he used an x-ring chain not and o-ring chain. Typically x-ring chains last 30-40% longer.

I had a look into this and to my surprise an x-ring chain is not much more expensive than an o-ring chain. Its certainly not 30% more expensive.

Since switching over to an xring chain (and using cleaning a product as well as proper chain lube) I now get TWICE the number of miles out of my chain and sprockets.

I'm quite an agressive rider so my motorcycle chain and sprockets tend to wear fast so I am delighted to have found a way to prolong the life of my chain and realise that just applying chain lube is not enough for maximum chain and sprocket life.
